AMERICA RECYCLES DAY
NOVEMBER 15th
Amelia County Department of Environmental Management
Keep America Beautiful (KAB) is launching the annual America Recycles Day campaign to encourage Americans to recycle and buy recycled products and has designated November 15th as America Recycles Day. The group 's mission is to hold an annual national awareness event promoting the social, environmental, and economic benefits of recycling and buying products made from recycled materials, with the goal to increase recycling throughout America as well as the purchase of recycled content products. Their campaign is designed to educate, motivate and inspire individuals to recycle more while encouraging their friends and families to do the same. Check out their website at www.americarecyclesday.org.
Here in Amelia County we can recycle newspaper, mixed paper, cardboard, #1 & #2 plastic bottles, aluminum and metal cans, glass bottles & jars, appliances, used motor oil, automotive batteries, textiles, plastic bags, electronics, computer printer ink jet and laser cartridges, rechargeable batteries and cell phones. We continue to look for and add new recycling opportunities when feasible. If you have any questions about recycling, please give us a call at 561-3004.
There are many benefits to recycling:
- Recycling reduces pollution
- Recycling reduces energy consumption
- Recycling reduces the need for landfills
- Recycling creates jobs
- Recycling saves natural resources
- Recycling provides raw materials for industry
- Recycling makes a positive difference– For all the above stated reasons, recycling makes a difference. It also teaches us valuable lessons about personal responsibility, caring for our environment and community involvement.
But much more can be done. We encourage all Amelia citizens to take this opportunity to renew your commitment to recycling and buying products made from recycled materials. Products made from recycled materials are everywhere - everything from bicycles and appliances to laundry detergent bottles and carpeting. A plastic bottle can be recycled into new containers, t-shirts and fleeces, park benches, plastic lumber, carpet and playground equipment. An aluminum can is able to go from the recycling bin to the store shelf as a new can in as few as 60 days. The 60% of paper recycled in the U.S. is made into products like cereal boxes, tissues, and file folders. Products such as structural sections and bridge spans use virtually 100% recycled steel. Recycled glass may be used in kitchen tiles, counter tops, and wall insulation. So, when you buy products made from recycled materials you complete the recycling loop. Keep up the good work Amelia citizens. Your efforts do make a difference!!
Please stop by our America Recycles display located at the James L. Hamner Public Library where we will have recycling information, “I Recycle” stickers and other giveaways. And most importantly, start recycling, keep recycling or increase your recycling efforts because “Amelia is Too Good to Waste.”
